Playing It Forward at Indian River Genealogical Society

VERO BEACH — The first meeting of the new season for the Indian River Genealogical Society (IRGS) is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10.

“Playing It Forward” will be the theme of the program. Members will share tales about their summer discoveries and travels, and an update on the new IRGS Cemetery Project will be given.

This and all general meetings of the IRGS are held in the large, first floor conference room of the Indian River County Main Library, located at 1600 21st St. in Vero Beach.

The meeting will convene at 9:30 a.m. with a brief business session, followed by refreshments. The program begins about 10:45 a.m.

All general meetings are free and open to the public.

Since its founding in 1983, members have published two books: one listing the county’s cemeteries, and the other depicts Indian River County’s history in vintage postcards.

Each year the society brings a noted genealogist to the county for its Valentine Seminar. Members have documented the lives of the men honored on Veterans’ Memorial Island Sanctuary; they also participated in a nationwide project to index the 1940 US Census.

Plus, members volunteer to help others research their families’ histories. The society provides numerous classes for beginning genealogy researchers.
