INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Indian River County Firefighter/paramedic Melech Berman, 46, for committing grand theft, according to authorities. Berman was arrested at the Emergency Operations Center.
Thursday, Aug. 8, the Sheriff’s Office responded to 2330 43rd St. in reference to a burglary, according to a warrant affidavit.
The victim stated that she suspected her landlord, Berman, removed all her belongings. She said she has a one year lease that does not expire until November.
When the victim left in the morning all her belongings were in the residence, around seven hours later she returned and found the side door unlocked and her residence empty, according to authorities. All her furniture, bedroom set, dishes, and other items were gone. She estimated all her items at around $1,000.
Berman tried to evict the victim, authorities said. During a hearing with Judge Joe Wild the case was dismissed, according to the victim, as long as she was still paying rent. It was confirmed by authorities that the judge denied the eviction.
Berman’s handyman said he received a call and Berman had him remove the property from the residence, according to the affidavit. The handyman was instructed to take the property to the landfill. The handyman did leave some clothes in a closet and a box of personal items such as photographs in a box.
Berman faces a charge of grand theft and was released on $5,000 bond.
Asst. Fire Chief Brian Burkeen said Thursday night Berman had not been suspended. Officials plan to meet Friday to discuss this situation.
