Affordable Care Act topic at Aug. 22 luncheon

VERO BEACH — Am I really a small employer who doesn’t have to offer health insurance, or do I fit into one of the exceptions? If I am a small employer and decide to offer affordable, minimal coverage, can I actually be disqualifying my employees from getting subsidies from the government for their spouse and/or dependents?

I own multiple companies. How will the Affordable Care Act affect me?

These are some of the questions that will be addressed at the luncheon on Thursday, Aug. 22, of the Vero Beach Christian Business Association held at 11:30 a.m. at The Plaza, 884 17th St. in Vero Beach.

Veronica Licona, a licensed life, health, and annuity insurance agent who is studying to become a Health Care Reform Specialist and to receive her Chartered Health Consultant designation, and Chris Vorce, C.P.A., who has an M.B.A. and a Graduate Certificate in Forensic Accounting, will co-present “How will the Affordable Care Act affect me and my business?”

Upcoming changes to the health care laws will have significant impact on all businesses and individuals, and this informative seminar will cover both medical and tax provision explanations for large and small employers as well as for individuals.

Attendees will be taught about the changes on the medical side with new minimum policy requirements, premium subsidies and group policy requirements, as well as on the tax side with penalty assessments, employee count calculations, new excise taxes, changes to the medical expense itemized deduction, and business communication requirements.

“Our hope is that everyone will walk away with guidance and direction as to how they may be impacted and what steps they must take now to minimize the financial impact for their business and family,” said Mrs. Licona.

According to VBCBA President Maureen Nicolace, the reason for the in-depth presentation stems from the nonprofit’s May luncheon, during which physician and former U.S. Congressman Dave Weldon gave an update on the status of the Affordable Care Act in fairly broad terms to a packed room of interested businesspeople.

“We had many questions from those in attendance, and Dr. Weldon was not in a position to answer specifics due to the constantly changing nature of the legislation, so our Board of Directors determined to bring back someone who could speak to the specific issues facing our business members,” explained Mrs. Nicolace.

The luncheon presentation includes a full buffet catered by Culinary Capers, featuring salad and roll, entrees and side dishes, dessert, and choice of beverage.

The cost is just $15 with RSVPs received by Monday, Aug., 19, or $17 after that date. Cancellations must also be made by Aug. 19 in order to not be charged for the lunch.

RSVPs may be made by emailing Lunch@VBCBA.org, and payment may also be made in advance through PayPal on the organization’s website at www.VBCBA.org.

VBCBA luncheons are open to members and non-members, and business owners are especially encouraged to attend. Questions may be sent in advance of the luncheon to Info@VBCBA.org.
