FELLSMERE — More than 600 children will be going back to school this month armed with new backpacks and fresh supplies thanks to Operation Hope’s annual Backpack Giveaway.
“I am beat,” said Operation Hope President and Founder Jesse Zermeno after the event. “But I’m extremely happy. It was phenomenal.”
The organization, with help from the community, collected more than 800 backpacks and more than enough supplies to fill them. The bags that were left over will be handed out to those in need who come to Operation Hope, located on County Road 512 in Fellsmere.
Among those going to school with new gear are brothers 14-year-old Bailey and 6-year-old Elijah Yoerin, of Vero Beach.
“It feels good,” Bailey said of knowing he’d be prepared on his first day as a freshman at Vero Beach High School.
Elijah nodded in agreement. He said he hoped to get a red and black backpack – his favorite colors.
Their mom, Heather Yoerin, heard about Operation Hope’s Backpack Giveaway from the property manager where they live.
She said the backpacks full of supplies would certainly help her sons go to school prepared – even if they’re not really ready to give up the summer.
Zermeno said the annual event would not have been the success it was if not for the continued support from the community.
“I’m very happy the community pulled through,” he said.
For the first time, Operation Hope brought in live entertainment like it has for its annual Christmas Giveaway.
“This time we have a little flavor,” Zermeno said, courtesy of several organizations.
While some organizations sent volunteers to provide the manpower needed to keep the event running smoothly, other groups sent magicians and clowns and other performers to keep the crowd entertained while waiting for the backpacks.
Zermeno said he hopes to bring the performers back again next year.
Businesses and organizations Zermeno said he wanted to thank included CenterPointe Church, Alpizar Law, Pepsi Co., Indian River Civic Association and IMS Inc.
