Authorities respond to explosion at Aquarius motel on beach

VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach Police Department and Indian River County Fire Rescue responded to the scene of an explosion at the Aquarius Oceanfront motel, at 1526 South Ocean Dr.

No injuries were reported by Fire Rescue and it was confined to room 111, according to the Indian River County Fire Rescue facebook page and the police department.

Witnesses at the scene said it was so loud it shook the whole building.

No cause has been released at this time. The two guests staying in the room are currently being interviewed, according to police. No other guests have been affected.

Investigators speculate that a grease fire in the kitchen may have contributed to the blast, but could not confirm that at this time.

Fire Marshal Lt. Greg Gilkey speculated that the explosion was caused by a propane gas leak in an adjacent laundry room. However, he cannot officially declare that as the cause until the gas line is pressure tested.
