Volunteers needed to plant on scrub jay conservation land

SEBASTIAN — A developer has cleared several acres on the scrub jay conservation land at Bristol/Barber St. in Sebastian. In order to restore and improve the habitat, scrub oaks will be planted for the scrub jays and wiregrass for the gopher tortoises.

We want to plant 250 scrub oaks and 25 wiregrass plants (1 gallon size.)

St. Johns River Water Management District’s Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program has graciously agreed to purchase the plants in order to restore habitat along the Indian River Lagoon region. However, volunteers from the community are needed to plant them and water them.

Volunteers are needed this weekend, Aug. 2-4, from 7-10 a.m.

If you can spare any time at all to help, it will be greatly appreciated. If you have a shovel, trowel, or gloves, please bring them with you. Please also remember to bring water to drink; donuts will be provided.

The property is located in Sebastian on Barber St., about 1/3 mile west of US 1, across from “Park Place.”
