Anne G. Keen, 97, Vero Beach

Anne G. Keen, 97, died July 31, 2013, at VNA/Hospice House in Vero Beach.

She was born in Vero Beach and was a lifelong resident of Vero Beach.

She was valedictorian of Vero Beach High School’s Class of 1934 and graduated from Stetson University in Deland with a bachelor’s degree in commercial subjects.

She taught bookkeeping and business at Vero Beach High School.

She served on numerous boards, including the Florida State Board of Mental Health, the Indian River Farm Bureau, the Girl Scouts of Indian River County, the Beautification Society of Vero Beach, and the Vero Beach Public Library, where she was secretary during the years of planning and fundraising for the new library on 20th Street.

She was a life member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, serving as president, vice president, and secretary.

She was director of the 10th District of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs and was named a life member in recognition of her service to the Garden Club of Indian River County, which she served as president, parliamentarian, and treasurer.

She was noble grand of the Rebekah Assembly of Fort Piece.

She was a member of the Indian River Historical Society, participated in its restoration of the Vero Beach Train Station, and was its president in 1986-87 when the station was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

She was honored as Woman of the Year in 1964 by the Vero Beach Business and Professional Women’s Club.

Survivors include her son, Joel P. Keen Jr., of Vero Beach; daughter, Barbara K. Parker, of Fairfax, Va.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Keen.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 5 at Cox-Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach, services follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach.
