INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An inmate of the Indian River County Jail died before being transferred from the jail to the Department of Corrections, according to authorities.
Charles Wallace, 54, had been in the Indian River County Jail since July 16, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He had been arrested on a warrant for parole violation and was scheduled to be transferred to the Department of Corrections on July 27.
Wallace had gone to breakfast July 25 and had returned to his cell around 6:20 a.m. A few minutes later, another inmate reported that Wallace was sitting on his bunk and collapsed, according to authorities.
EMS was immediately notified and CPR was started. Paramedics arrived and transported Wallace to the Indian River Medical Center. Continued resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and Wallace was pronounced dead at 7:01 a.m.
Wallace had previously been admitted to IRMC on July 18 and was medically discharged on July 19, according to authorities. He was returned to the Indian River County Jail after his release from the hospital.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, any death involving an inmate will involve an investigation. An initial review of the case by detectives reveals the death appears to be related to Wallace’s medical history but the investigation is not yet finalized and an autopsy is forthcoming.
