SEBASTIAN — A Sebastian man was placed under arrest Friday, June 21, for allegedly trying to kick his way into a bathroom that contained a woman and her three children, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. He was armed with a gun during the incident.
Kelvin Barnes, 28, faces charges of battery domestic violence, criminal mischief, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to authorities, Barnes was in Ft. Pierce with the victim. Two days prior, the victim reportedly told Barnes that she had cheated on him. When they left to go home Barnes started yelling at her about cheating. On their way home, the victim stated that Barnes was driving and she was in the front passenger seat.
Barnes at one point reached over and punched her in the face with a closed fist, according to the Sheriff’s Office. After which, Barnes pulled over at the preserve of Oslo and the victim jumped out of the car. She then called her mother to have her come and pick her up.
The affidavit states that when the mother and victim arrived back at the residence, her mother confronted Barnes about hitting her daughter. At which time, Barnes pushed her mother and told the victim, “she better get her mother or he was going to kill her.”
Authorities said Barnes then walked over to his sister’s car and grabbed a big silver handgun from the back seat. The victim said she then saw Barnes walk over to her mother, push her to the ground pointing the gun at her.
“I’m going to kill you (expletive),” said Barnes.
After that, according to the Sheriff’s Office, Barnes ran to his sister’s car and left the house.
The victim, according to authorities, went inside the house, locking the front door and locking herself in the bathroom with her three kids.
According to the victim in the affidavit, Barnes returned to the house and broke in through the kitchen window. When he was inside, Barnes started banging on the bathroom door. The victim advised him that the police were on the way.
In response, he said, “when he gets out of jail he is going to kill her, the kids, and the kid’s father,” according to the affidavit.
The victim, according to the Sheriff’s Office, had a bruise under her left eye and she was visibly shaking and the children were crying and hysterical. The victim advised she thought she was going to die.
Barnes’ bond amount was set at $107,500.
