Scuba diver found dead off shores of Indian River County

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A diver from Micco, Fla., was found dead off the shores of Indian River County by his boat captain after he did not surface.

Wednesday, June 19, at approximately 4:30 p.m., SCUBA diver Jeffery Croy, 46, was diving about four miles off shore in the Atlantic Ocean between Wabasso Beach and the Sebastian Inlet, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The captain of the vessel noticed that Croy had not surfaced when expected and entered the water to search for him.

According to authorities, Croy was located in relatively shallow water near the dive site; he was motionless near the ocean floor. He was returned to the boat where CPR was performed.

The diving vessel was met by a boat from Indian River County Fire Rescue Division and Croy was taken to shore where an ambulance transported him to Indian River Medical Center.

Continued efforts to revive Croy were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident and will be coordinating their efforts with the medical examiner.

The Sheriff’s Office said all of Croy’s dive equipment has been retained as evidence and witnesses in the case have been interviewed. The investigation is ongoing.

The name of the vessel and its captain were not immediately released, although they are believed to be based in Indian River County.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, prior to residing in Micco, Croy has previously listed addresses in both the Sebastian and Vero Beach areas.
