Dr. Robert E. Stevens, 88, Vero Beach

Dr. Robert E. Stevens, 88, died June 12, 2013, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

He was born in Lexington, Ky., and lived in Vero Beach for seven years, coming from Virginia.

While working for the South Carolina Wildlife Commission he perfected the technique of fish in vitro fertilization and was the creator of the stripped bass hatcheries throughout the United States.

Following his research, he traveled the world sharing his knowledge with fellow scientists.

He ended his career as the Head of Fisheries Research with the Department of the Interior.

He served in the Army Air Forces in Italy during World War II as a navigator and bombardier.

He attended the College of William and Mary in Virginia and received a bachelor of arts degree.

He also attended North Carolina State University where he earned a bachelor of science degree.

Later, he returned to North Carolina State and earned his doctoral degree.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Hunter Stevens; daughters, Victoria T. Stevens, of Miami, Mary S. Torres, of Vero Beach and Robin A. Arnold, of Alexandria, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

A graveside service is planned at Leeds Episcopal Church, Leeds, Va.
