INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Some drive through for coffee, others hamburgers, but Monday night pet owners drove through The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County to get their pets vaccinated.
Vaccinations against rabies and the parvo and distemper viruses were offered for a deeply discounted $5 during the “Drive Rover on Over” event. This is the second time the Humane Society has held this event.
Last year it attracted 140 dogs in two hours, this year they got 110 pets in the first hour and a half with a few stragglers toward the end.
The first to arrive – at 5 p.m. – for the 6 p.m. event were Eve Mrozowski and Abby, a boxer mix.
“I think it’s absolutely exceptional,” said Mrozowski.
Mrozowski said she came back to the event this year because it was so well organized last year. Getting vaccinations for $5 that would otherwise cost $50 to $75 at the vet, was another reason many of the participants attended.
The Humane Society could do this mainly in part because of an anonymous donor. Staff volunteered their time to host the vaccination event.
Vlasta Abochafaja was farther back in line with Sparky.
“It cost too much money if you go to a doctor,” said Abochafaja.
Brian Stokes and Dustin Greer were waiting in the grass with Sox, a pit bull. They were the only walk ups at the event.
“Long as they come to us I don’t care how they get here,” said Ilka Daniel, of the Humane Society.
“We want to make certain that our animals are protected,” said Janet Winikoff, of the Humane Society. “For us it’s about vaccinating the greatest amount of animals and doing the greatest amount of good.”
