Matin J. “Rusty” May, 85, died May 19, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Vero Beach since 1986, coming from Fort Lauderdale and Carmel, N.Y.
Before retirement, he worked as a lineman and telephone engineer for AT&T and BellSouth for 35 years.
He served in the Navy during the Korean War.
He founded the Carmel Youth Association in 1973.
He attended St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach.
He volunteered for the Vero Beach Recreational Department, where he was involved with the youth football program.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Anna May; sons, Martin May, of Sherman, Conn.; Michael May, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Brian May, of Miami; daughter, Maureen Christie, of Wingdale, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or St. John of the Cross, 7550 26th St., Vero Beach, FL 32966.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. May 22.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. May 23 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church.
