Burglar drops trail of evidence leading to his house

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Detectives followed a trail of evidence that a burglar left leading to his home and his arrest, according to an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Wednesday night, detectives from the Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the home of a burglary suspect, Michael Sherman, 25, in the 6400 block of 55th Square, Vero Beach.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, on the morning of May 15, detectives were called to the victim’s residence to investigate a burglary in which firearms, a computer, a sword, drafting equipment, and a large quantity of loose change was stolen.

Investigators located several coins outside of the victim’s residence and discovered they essentially formed a trail leading away from the home. The coins, approximately 30 to 40 of which were found on the ground, lead to the home of the suspect, according to authorities.

Detectives obtained a search warrant based on the trail of evidence leading from the victim’s house to Sherman’s residence. The home was unoccupied when deputies served the search warrant.

Inside, they located a unique set of drafting pencils and some ammunition belonging to the victim, the press release stated. While on scene, Sherman arrived and eventually led investigators to additional stolen property, more ammunition and a computer, which he had buried in his backyard.

Sherman was arrested and faces charges of armed burglary based on the firearms that were stolen from the victim’s home. Additional stolen items were not recovered and detectives believe additional suspects are likely involved, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation remains active and anyone with information about the additional suspects or the stolen property is asked to contact Detective Joe Abollo at (772) 978-6189.
