Couple tries to trade items off shelf for gift cards without paying

SEBASTIAN — A Vero Beach woman and a Barefoot Bay man were arrested at the Wal-Mart on 2001 US 1 in Sebastian after police say they tried to scam the store.

Sebastian Police and Wal-Mart’s loss prevention officer stopped Shannon N. Whitaker, 34, of Vero Beach, and Steven Meyer, 31, of Barefoot Bay, outside of the store.

Whitaker was observed on surveillance video removing items from the shelf, placing them in the cart, and then handing the cart over to Meyer, according to the arrest affidavit. Meyer was waiting for Whitaker at customer service.

Upon receiving the cart with merchandise that was not paid for, Meyer then returned the items for a gift card worth $223.44, according to police.

As the couple exited, they were detained by police.

After Whitaker was read her rights she admitted that she was going to attempt to sell the gift cards for cash, according to the affidavit.

Whitaker and Meyer face charges of retail theft and trespassing.
