William Van Herwarde, Vero Beach

William Van Herwarde died April 23, 2013, at his home.

He was born in Passaic, N.J., and lived in Vero Beach for seven years, coming from Packanack Lake and Green Pond, N.J.

He graduated from La Salle Military Academy on Long Island, N.Y., and held a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College.

He served in the Navy during World War I.

Before retirement he was owner and president of the Van Herwarde Dairy in Passaic, N.J., which his grandfather had established in 1880.

He attended Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach.

He was a parishioner of St. Simon Church in Green Pond for 55 years.

He was a member of the Green Pond Yacht Club and the Rotary Club of Passaic.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Van Herwarde; sons, William Van Herwarde and Thomas Van Herwarde; daughters, Joan Smith and Carol Gannon; his sister, Ann Sullivan; and 11 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Home, Little Sisters of the Poor, 140 Shepherd Lane, Totowa, NJ 07512.

Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. April 26 at Strunk Funeral Home in Vero Beach.

A prayer service will follow at 4 p.m.

There will be a Mass of Christian burial and celebration of life in June at St. Simons Church in Green Pond.
