INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Work in Indian River County by the Florida Department of Transportation is going to affect Interstate 95, Merrill Barber Bridge, State Road 60, and U.S. 1. Completion of all projects is estimated to be complete by early 2014.
I-95 from the St. Lucie/Indian River County line north to State Road 60
(Osceola Boulevard/Exit 147) at Vero Beach. I-95 is being widened from the St. Lucie/Indian River County line north to State Road 60 (Osceola Boulevard/Exit #147) at Vero Beach. Improvements in this 6.84-mile-long project include: adding one lane on I-95 in each direction; removing old asphalt and repaving the existing lanes; reconstructing the SR 60 interchange; reconfiguring turn lanes and adding traffic signals at the SR 60/94th Avenue intersection just west of I-95; replacing the I-95 bridges over 4th Street (Citrus Road), 90th Avenue and SR 60; traffic signal and highway lighting improvements; constructing sound barrier walls adjacent to the Lakewood Village, Department of Corrections Housing and Indian River Aerodrome communities; and landscaping.
Construction began Monday, Jan. 9. Cost/Completion: $54.4 million. Completion is expected in early 2014.
Traffic Impact:
- The speed limit on I-95 through this construction zone is 60 MPH at alltimes.
- Motorists should be alert for slow moving construction vehicles entering and leaving the travel lanes.
- One lane will be closed in each direction on I-95 from Monday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- One lane may be closed intermittently in either direction on I-95 Mondaythrough Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- All northbound lanes on I-95 at the 4th Street and the 90th Avenueoverpasses are shifted west onto the new two-lane bridge until late 2013.
- One lane may be closed intermittently in either direction on State Road 60at the I-95 overpass Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- One lane may be closed periodically in either direction on 4th Street atthe I-95 overpass Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
- 90th Avenue will be closed periodically in either direction at the I-95overpass Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Merrill Barber Bridge is going through a rehabilitation project on State Road 60. The bridge is undergoing maintenance and rehabilitation, including pressure washing and painting the concrete beams and columns; pressure washing and painting the concrete barrier walls; repairing broken concrete on pier caps and fishing pier; and installing decorative paver bricks on fishing pier. Cost/Completion: $1.5 million. Completion is expected in Spring 2014.
Traffic Impact:
- One lane will be closed in each direction on SR 60 from Indian RiverBoulevard to Riverside Park Drive/Indian River Drive from Monday through Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for pressure washing and painting barriers walls on the bridge.
- U.S. 1 between Captain Hiram’s entrance and Davis Street (Ninth Street)
- One northbound lane will be closed for asphalt work Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
