Pornographic image found on phone leads to arrest

VERO BEACH — Vero Beach Police were alerted to a pornographic image of a child found on a phone that lead to one suspect being arrested.

Officers from the Vero Beach Police Department were flagged down at a local convenience store in the afternoon hours of April, 17, regarding an image that was found on a cellular phone.

The complainant advised that she had purchased the phone for a subject, later identified as Jay Allen Robbins, 36, whom she was trying to help due to his current situation. She explained that Robbins was battling a drug and alcohol addiction and that he did not have a permanent address.

She further advised that when she made contact with Robbins on April, 17, she found out he had been abusing drugs and alcohol again so she took the phone back. She then was scrolling through the images on the phone and located what appeared to be child pornography. The Officers viewed the image and immediately called a Detective.

Detectives seized the phone after determining that the image appeared to be that of a young female child being sexually assaulted.

Detectives then responded to the last known location of Robbins and found him with self-inflicted injuries to his wrists in an effort to commit suicide. He advised that he knew that he was going to be turned in by the female because she had confronted him about the image.

Robbins was read his Miranda rights and he agreed to speak with Detectives at the hospital where he was treated for his self-inflicted wounds.

Robbins admitted to downloading the image and at first advised that he frequently visits pornographic sites with names such as “Barely Legal” and “Jail Bait”, however he did not admit to any illegal activity. Upon further questioning regarding the image he admitted to the fact that it appeared to be an adolescent female who was possibly as young as 3 years of age.

He advised that he “has issues and urges to look at child pornography”. The identity of the child and perpetrator on the illegal image is unknown and Robbins had no idea as to who they were or where the offense took place.

In addition to the cellular phone, several other computer components were seized.
