INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Law enforcement officers from all agencies in Indian River County joined with athletes from the county’s Special Olympics to raise awareness and bring attention to the organization.
Dozens of officers, deputies, lieutenants, corporals, members of K-9 and SWAT ran alongside the Olympians down State Road 60, starting at the Ryanwood Plaza at 58th Avenue and ended at the Vero Beach Police Department where they shared in a barbecue lunch.
“It keeps my health in check,” Sebastian Community Policing Officer Steve Marcinik said. He added that he planned to make a respectable appearance.
Indian River County K-9 Sgt. and SWAT member Pat White said the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run is a chance for him and others in public safety to intermingle with the young Olympians.
“It’s a good way for the team to interact,” Sgt. White said.
Other agencies represented in the run were the Fellsmere Police Department, Vero Beach Police Department, Indian River Shores Public Safety.
