GIFFORD — The Indian River County SWAT and crisis negotiation teams are on scene after a female who fired a gun barricaded herself in her apartment at the 4700 block of Kennedy Court in the Victory Park community of Gifford.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, two females were involved in a verbal altercation outside the apartment around 9 a.m. Wednesday when one female escalated the incident by firing a single shot.

Authorities are unclear at this time if the female fired at the other person or fired a warning shot. Neither female was injured in the incident.

The suspect then barricaded herself in the apartment, prompting the Sheriff’s Office to deploy the SWAT team and crisis negotiators. The Sheriff’s Office is speaking with the suspect’s boyfriend in an attempt to open communication with the female.
