VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach High School Music Department presents “Ruffles and Flourishes” Chamber Concert on Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. in the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th St.
The concert will feature the superior rated VBHS Chamber Winds, Brass and Percussion Ensembles, as well as several highly talented soloists.
The concert will include traditional tunes by Edvard Grieg and also some contemporary compositions by Alan Hovhaness, Lynn Glassock, Brett William Dietz, and Michael Colgrass, and a very colorful melody called Sun Paints Rainbows on the Vast Waves by David Bedford.
Several pieces have been described as “exotic, light-hearted, charming, and fresh” by classical music critics. Some are inspired by English folk songs and others by African or Native American rhythms.
According to Music Education Advocacy Resources, early musical training helps develop brain areas involved in language and reasoning as well as enhancing teamwork skills and discipline.
Also, recent studies show that students who study the arts are more successful on standardized tests.
As part of the regular spring season at the Performing Arts Center, this concert provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their recently acquired knowledge of musical technique and craftsmanship.
This concert involves nearly 100 student musicians.
Proceeds go to benefit Indian River County music education programs.
Tickets are $12 for the lower level and $10 for the upper level. All seating is reserved.
