VERO BEACH — Seven people have been displaced due to a fire that started in building 12 around 5:30 p.m. at Shadowbrook Apartments on 16th Street in Vero Beach.
There were no known injuries.
Two separate families in the building have been displaced – one because of the fire, the other due to smoke damage. The American Red Cross is on scene to assess what help the families will need.
The fire started in the kitchen and was contained to a single unit. Smoke spread through some of the 10-unit building, according to the battalion chief on scene.
The official cause is being investigated but the tenants in the unit told emergency dispatchers it was a grease fire.
Five engines, a ladder truck, and one ambulance responded to the fire.
