Vero City Council approves electric sale to Florida Power and Light

VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach City Council voted 3-2 Tuesday night to approve the contract to sell the Vero Beach electric utility to Florida Power and Light.

Mayor Craig Fletcher, Vice Mayor Tracy Carroll and Councilwoman Pilar Turner voted yes, with Councilman Dick Winger and Councilman Jay Kramer dissenting.

Prior to the vote, transactional attorney John Igoe gave the council an update on minor changes that had been made to the agreement since the council workshop last week.

About two dozen members of the public, former council members, two county commissioners and others spoke from the podium for two hours for and against the sale. Nearly 100 people gathered in the council chambers for the vote on the deal which has taken more than three years to broker.

On March 12 voters who live within the Vero Beach city limits will be asked to vote to approve or reject the deal by referendum, as the city has called a special election for this purpose with nothing else on the ballot.
