Robert S. Champagne, 80, Vero Beach

Robert S. Champagne, 80, died Feb. 2, 2013, at Hospice House in Vero Beach.

He was born in Hartford, Conn., and lived in Vero Beach, coming from his birth place.

During the Korean War he served in the 40th Infantry Division and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Before retirement, he worked for 40 years for Aetna Life & Casualty, retiring as assistant vice president, responsible for Aetna’s Medicare programs.

While at Aetna he was the recipient of the Superior Achievement Award by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services for fraud and abuse detection programs in health care.

His community activities included service as chairman of the Parish Council at the Church of St. Helena in West Hartford, Conn.; president of Grove Isle Condominium Association in Vero Beach; and with Town Building Committee, Historical Society and Grantham Democratic Party, all in New Hampshire.

He graduated from Hartford Public High School, University of Connecticut and Hartford Graduate Center at Rensselaer.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Catherine Hickson Champagne; son, Andrew Damian Champagne, of Burlington, Vt.; daughter, Alison Claire Champagne, of Cardiff, U.K.; and brothers, A. Donald Champagne, of Coventry, Conn., and Ronald Champagne, of South Windsor, Conn.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Philip Champagne.
