Robert Henry Strong, 89, Vero Beach

Robert Henry Strong, 89, died Feb. 8, 2013 at the VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach.

He was born in New York City and lived in Vero Beach since 1987, coming from DeWitt, N.Y.

Before retirement, he worked as a mason for the Local 519 Plasterers and Masons for 30 years.

He spent the last five years of his career as the union’s business agent.

He graduated from high school in Evanston, Ill., and later attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, until he enlisted in the military.

He served in the Army during World War II in the 10th Mountain Division, and was assigned to the 110th Signal Platoon.

He attended alumni gatherings of the 10th Mountain Division since the time of his military service.

He was a member of the DeWitt Community Church; the Antique Classic Boat Society; and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Jeanne Gorman Strong, of Vero Beach; daughter, Susan Larson, of Valparaiso, Ind.; son, Thomas Peter Strong, of Pompey, N.Y.; daughter, Cindy Stratton, of East Syracuse, N.Y.; son, James (Deb) Strong, of Skaneateles, N.Y.; daughter, Cinderbus Strong, of Old Forge, N.Y.; sister, Gerry Gocke, of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted at a later date in Dewitt, N.Y.

Arrangements are by Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.
