Indian River Symphonic Association endows four year scholarship

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River Symphonic Association has recently endowed a second four year college scholarship for a graduating high school senior planning to major in music. The scholarship will be administered by Dollars for Scholars of Indian River County.

This new scholarship complements a similar scholarship which was endowed in 2005. With two scholarships now endowed, the Symphonic Association can award a four year college scholarship to a graduating senior every other year.

The endowed scholarships administered by Dollars for Scholars are one of two types of scholarships awarded by Indian River Symphonic Association. The second type of scholarship is a one-time financial award presented to one or more students every spring, regardless of financial need. Winners of both types of scholarships in 2013 will be announced at the last concert of the season on April 14.

Since its founding in 1993, the Indian River Symphonic Association has brought acclaimed symphonic orchestras and guest soloists from around the world to Vero Beach for the enjoyment and the enrichment of the community.

“A part of its mission has always been education. The scholarships, supported each year by concert ticket sales and contributions from donors, are an example of this commitment,” said Ray Mitchell, President of the Association.

Dollars for Scholars of Indian River County has been providing need-based college scholarships to Indian River County students since 1965. Over the years it has supported more than 2,500 students with scholarships totaling over $8 million.

The organization is funded solely through the generosity of residents of Indian River County and organizations such as the Indian River Symphonic Association.

Applications for both types of scholarships are now being accepted by Dollars for Scholars and the Indian River Symphonic Association, and students are urged to submit their applications well before the deadlines in February.

Applications for the Dollars for Scholars four year award are available on the Dollars for Scholars website www.DFSIndianRiver.org or by calling the DFS office at (772) 569-9869.

The Indian River Symphonic Association scholarship application required by both the DFS scholarship as well as one time award scholarships are available on the association’s website www.IRSymphonic.org, or by calling the office at (772) 778-1070.
