Albert Carl Wickel, 85, died Jan. 24, 2013, at home.
He was born in New York City and lived in Vero Beach since 1986, coming from Stony Brook, N.Y.
Before retirement, he was a professional flight engineer for Pan American Airways for 37 years.
During that time he was the owner and operator of Port Jefferson Marine on Long Island, N.Y.
He held a captain’s license, was a sailing instructor and was a real estate broker.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
He attended Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach.
He was a member of the Sierra Club, Stony Brook Yacht Club in New York and the U.S. Power Squadron and a leader in the Boy Scouts of America.
Survivors include his sons, retired Air Force Col. Albert S. Wickel, retired Naval Reserve Cdr. John W. Wickel, William C. Wickel, Paul R. Wickel, James A. Wickel, Karl S. Wickel and Matthew S. Wickel; sisters, Wally Wickel, Margaret Wickel-Kunz, Bertha Niebuhr and Marianne Wickel-Schloss; and 21 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Anne Simpson Wickel; and brother, William Wickel.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 28 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Vero Beach.
Burial will follow in John’s Island Cemetery, Indian River Shores.
