Sheriff’s Office assists FHP in catching suspect in failed traffic stop

GIFFORD — The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office helped the Florida Highway Patrol catch a suspect accused of fleeing during an attempted traffic stop shortly before 10 a.m. The Sheriff’s Office deployed its helicopter, K-9 units and other patrol units to find and apprehend the driver, who has not yet been identified.

The driver of what was identified as a red Nissan Altima fled an attempted traffic stop, resulting in a crash in a wooded area near the 4200 block of 38th Avenue. The crash caused a small brush fire, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The driver then bailed out of the vehicle and fled the crash scene on foot. It took law enforcement about 30 minutes to track the driver and place him into custody.

The School Resource Team at Dodgertown Elementary School secured the school during the incident.
