Hugh “Spike” Towey, 85, Vero Beach

Hugh “Spike” Towey, 85, died Dec. 26, 2012, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

He was born in New Jersey and lived in Vero Beach, including Grand Harbor, for 15 years, coming from Short Hills, N.J.

Before retirement, he was the president and sole proprietor of the Whitemarsh Corp., a manufacturer’s representative in the petroleum services industry in Edison, N.J.

He served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

He was of the Catholic faith and was a longtime member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Short Hills.

When he relocated to Vero Beach, he attended Holy Cross Catholic Church.

He was a longtime member of the Racquets Club, Short Hills; Baltusrol Golf Club, Springfield Township, N.J.; and Grand Harbor Club, Vero Beach.

Survivors include his daughters, Gael Towey, of New York City, Ellen Kendall, of Short Hills, Liz Ann Doherty and Carol Towey, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sons, Mark Towey, of Westfield, N.J., and Michael Towey, of Rowayton, Conn.; and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Louise Towey.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 2 p.m. Dec. 28 at St. Helen Catholic Church, Vero Beach.
