VERO BEACH — The Education Foundation of Indian River County (EF-IRC) received a grant of $1,500 from Grand Harbor Community Outreach (GHCO) to support the Vision for Reading Program.
The funds were raised during the recent “Evening of Giving” that was held at the Grand Harbor Club House in November. Pat Andrus and Linda Bradley successfully organized the event which raised over $30,000.
GHCO volunteers Luella Stiansen, Pat Hamlin, John Pearse, Bonnie Caffray, and Jan Harrell recently presented the grant check. The funds will be used to help students in need receive vision screening and glasses from the non-profit Vision Quest of Florida.
A total of 22 students will benefit from this generous gift.
The program provides vision screening, follow-up eye examinations, and glasses to all students in Indian River County public schools (K-12.) The program is a collaborative partnership with the Learning Alliance and the School District of Indian River County.
Prior to this program, students were not receiving comprehensive vision screening. Through a grant from the John’s Island Foundation, vision screening devices were purchased to screen all 17,000 students in 27 schools (grades K-12.)
Now students can see to learn. The investment in screening and mediating vision issues saves on the expense of children catching up when they are behind.
