WABASSO ISLAND — The Environmental Learning Center recently elected seven community leaders to its 25 member Board of Trustees.
Newly elected to the board filling three year terms were Holly Brown, a mother of three young children and retired attorney, Michele Downey, a J. Hilburn Style Advisor, and Timothy Buhl, retired owner, President and Chairman of Aerco International, Inc. and Sigma-Netics, Inc.
In addition, four others were reelected to serve a second term on the board. They were William Friesell, Kevin Given, Georgie Hutton, and Carl Miller.
The annual meeting of the ELC was held at the Quail Valley River Club boathouse. Sixty current, incoming, and prior board members attended the meeting. Thomas Spackman, M.D., the out-going Chairman of the Board, welcomed William Friesell to assume his position.
Other officers elected were David Van Pelt as Vice Chairman, Andrew Hartline as Treasurer, and Georgie Hutton as Secretary.
2013 is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the ELC. Pelican Island Audubon Society was honored at the annual meeting for their foresight in starting the community project of creating a nature center in Indian River County. Their efforts lead to the creation of the ELC in 1988.
The Environmental Learning Center is a nonprofit environmental education center located on a 64 acre island campus off County Road 510 at the western end of the Wabasso Bridge.
Its facilities include Discovery Station housing aquariums, a marine touch tank and exhibits, native plant gardens, picnic facilities, and gift shop.
ELC members receive free year round admission to the ELC, as well as discounts on all educational excursions. Non-member ELC admission is $5, but the first Saturday of every month is free to all and children 12 and under are free year-round.
