ELC WinterGreen Nightlights Dec. 13-14

WABASSO ISLAND — The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) announces its first ever WinterGreen celebration to take place on the evenings of Thursday, Dec. 13, and Friday, Dec. 14, from 4-7 p.m. It is an opportunity for all ages to explore ELC’s Wabasso Island campus at sundown, as well as experience the many activities planned for the event.

For those interested in boating excursions, 30 minute canoe trips are planned where paddlers are guided by twinkling holiday lights along the tree lined trails.

Those who are technically inclined can enjoy the challenge of a Geocaching treasure hunt.

Younger children will be able to take a stroll along Indian River County’s first and only StoryWalk, a trail lined with pages from a children’s storybook about a young boy spending winter in Florida.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library.

ELC is known for its hands-on crafts using recycled materials. A station will be set up for those with an artistic urge to make a holiday ornament to take home. At 6 p.m., the Native Way trail running from Mardie’s Hut picnic pavilion to the Indian River Lagoon will be illuminated.

There are no reservations for either evening. The charge is $5 per person with children 12 and under and ELC members admitted free.

The normal admission fee is waived for this event thanks to the sponsorship of Ray and Beth Smith and George and Sandy Kahle.

For more information, please call the ELC at (772) 589-5050.

The Environmental Learning Center is located north of Vero Beach off County Road 510 at the western end of the Wabasso Bridge. Its campus includes exhibit areas, native plant gardens, picnic facilities, gift shop, and visitor center.

ELC membership benefits, a list of its many field excursions, EcoVentures, including nature walks, canoe excursions, and boating adventures, can be found at www.DiscoverELC.org.

Admission is $5 per person, children 12 and under free, and ELC members receive free admission year-round. The first Saturday of every month is free to all.
