Volunteers sought for income tax assistance

VERO BEACH — United Way of Indian River County has a need for people to provide free tax preparation assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

VITA is available for low-to-moderate-income individuals and families earning less than $49,000 a year.

VITA volunteers do more than just prepare people’s taxes. They play a critical role in ensuring that low-income county residents access valuable tax credits without paying high fees.

Volunteers also provide important information to customers about other free programs such as benefits screening, financial education or budget coaching, and helping clients to turn their tax refunds into long-lasting financial security.

Benefits of becoming a VITA volunteer include: free IRS training and materials to help you develop a lifelong skill and build your resume; a variety of locations, dates, and times convenient to your schedule; ongoing support; a Certificate of Recognition & Letter of Appreciation from the IRS at the end of the tax season; and the personal satisfaction you’ll gain from providing an important service to your community.

No accounting experience is required. The tax software guides you every step of the way, and volunteers are protected under the Volunteer Protection Act.

Volunteer training in Indian River County will be held Dec. 17-21, and certification will be attained on-line. Certified volunteers will be required to commit to two half-days, or one full-day per week from Jan. 22 – April 15, 2013.

If you would like to volunteer, please send an email to Eve.Ballance@UnitedWayIRC.org. or call (772) 567-8900, ext. 20.

United Way of Indian River County is encouraging people in the community to LIVE UNITED by giving to the annual campaign, helping spread the word about programs and services that help people in need, and volunteering their time and talent to a local cause.
