Sebastian City Council honors Kathy Falzone

SEBASTIAN — Mayor Bob McPartlan Wednesday presented long-time Recreation Director Kathy Falzone with a proclamation recognizing her service to Sebastian’s young and old.

Falzone began working as an instructor at the Sebastian Community Center 30 years ago in 1982 when recreation programs were run by Indian River County. She segued into her present position as Recreation Supervisor for the center in 1993 and then joined the City of Sebastian in 2002 when the city established its own recreation department.

In addition to selecting and supervising all the instructors who teach classes at the Sebastian Community Center, Falzone teaches many classes herself, from Tai Chi, senior aerobics, ballet, tumble bees and baby bees movement classes, plus three levels of gymnastics.

McPartlan said Falzone’s classes draw more than 200 students per week to the community center, and noted that his own twins enjoy Falzone’s baby bees classes at the center.

Over the years, Falzone has worked on numerous special events the city puts on for holidays and other occasions.

In accepting the proclamation, Falzone said that “working for the city has been awesome.”

Falzone has been named employee of the quarter for her many achievements and for all the recreational opportunities she provides to local residents through her classes and the programs she supervises.

She thanked Recreation Director Chris McCarthy for nominating her for the award.

The council also presented proclamations to recognize National Adoption Awareness Month and National Runaway Prevention Month.  Those proclamations were given to a representative from the Children’s Home Society.
