ELC Volunteer Open House on Dec. 4

WABASSO ISLAND — Volunteering at the non-profit Environmental Learning Center (ELC) offers a multitude of benefits. It starts with the sense of pride in helping to further the organization’s mission of environmental education.

There is the positive social networking resulting from the camaraderie with fellow volunteers and visitors. And, ELC’s volunteers expand their own personal knowledge as a result of the extensive educational programs organized specifically for them.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 3-5 p.m., the Environmental Learning Center is holding its 9th annual Open House for those interested in learning more about volunteering.

The afternoon session is conducted in an informal, drop-in format. No reservations are necessary. Nancy Puglio, ELC Volunteer Coordinator, will describe the many volunteer opportunities. In addition, current volunteers will be there to answer questions about their experiences at the ELC.

A wide range of volunteer opportunities exist for both seasonal and year-round residents. For example, those interested in meeting people might enjoy greeting visitors at the entry pavilion, or serving as Activity Docent in the Discovery Station which houses exhibits and aquariums.

Those who enjoy working in gardens with their hands will find many opportunities in caring for the 64 acre campus and trails on the “ELC Green Team.”

Those with retail experience will find the ELC’s gift shop, The Nature Nook, a rewarding place to volunteer.

ELC’s volunteers contribute over 5,000 hours annually.

Continuing education is a top priority for the ELC. For the 2012-2013 season, a 10 session Enrichment Training Series on current ecological topics is being offered exclusively for ELC volunteers.

The Environmental Learning Center is located north of Vero Beach off CR 510 at the western end of the Wabasso Bidge.

Its campus includes exhibit areas, native plant gardens, picnic facilities, gift shop, and visitor center.

ELC membership benefits, a list of its many field excursions, EcoVentures, including nature walks, canoe excursions, and boating adventures, can be found at www.DiscoverELC.org.

Admission is $5 per person. Children 12 and under are free. ELC members receive free admission year-round. The first Saturday of every month is free to all.
