Church gives away school supplies at rummage sale Nov. 10

SEBASTIAN — Christ the King Lutheran’s Fall Rummage Sale Nov. 10 comes with a twist. Half the proceeds go to the Ecumenical Food Pantry on Roseland Ave., and the first 80 students at the Sebastian event will receive free school supplies.

It is also accepting non-perishable food items and financial donations for the food pantry.

“There is such a need, such an increase in people who are hungry,” said Carolyn Wright, food pantry volunteer from Christ the King. “They are out of work, out of homes. The need just keeps increasing.”

“CTK’s purpose is to share God’s love and will as we reach out to our neighbors,’” said the Rev. Karen Leedahl. “Our congregation is a part of the greater Sebastian community and desires to live out our concern for the needs of our neighbors. We share half of the proceeds of our yard sale with the Ecumenical Food Pantry and give away school supplies to children to demonstrate our convictions in a tangible manner.”

Members of Christ the King Lutheran and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans provided the school supplies; from pens and pencils to notebooks and glue.

Scouts from Brownie Troop #50318, led by Amanda Hannan and co leader Rhonda Rigaud, filled 80 re-usable tote bags with the supplies.

“The Brownies were a big help to this community service ministry,” said Doris Kilbane, Social Service chairperson. “In addition, Sebastian dentist Dr. Patrick Pirkle donated fifty of the tote bags. It is teamwork that makes this project successful.”

Thrivent Financial is also helping support the food pantry through a two-part grant to Christ the King Lutheran. The first part was a straight grant of $5,000 to the church for the food pantry. The second part will award 50 cents for every dollar the church raises for the food pantry between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31.

The rummage sale is from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat., Nov. 10, at Christ the King Lutheran, 1301 Sebastian Blvd. in Sebastian.
