No school Friday for Indian River County students due to Sandy

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — School district officials met at lunchtime Thursday and decided to cancel school and after-school activities on Friday due to the area being under a tropical storm warning from Hurricane Sandy.

“The School District of Indian River County is announcing that all schools, including charter schools, will be closed tomorrow, Friday, October 26, due to the possibility of high winds and heavy rain, as Hurricane Sandy passes our coast. All school district offices will be close as well,” the district posted at 12:45 p.m.

Thursday morning, the School District posted on its website that “All after-school activities are cancelled for today with the exception of extended day care. Please continue to monitor our website for further updates.”

Sandy is now a Category 2 storm and, though it is not forecast to make landfall in Florida, is expected to bring squally conditions including tropical storm force winds and downpours to the area beginning Thursday night and into Friday evening.

Schools remained open on Aug. 28 while Hurricane Isaac skirted Florida and many schools were forced to place campuses on lock down or to move students out of portable classrooms due to tornado warnings.
