Frederick James Smith, 85, Vero Beach

Frederick James Smith, 85, of Vero Beach died Oct. 9, 2012, at Indian River Medical Center.

He was born in Rochester, Penn., and moved to Vero Beach in 2007, coming from Orlando.

He was a Navy veteran serving during World War II.

He earned his associate degree and had also attended the University of Central Florida, Orlando.

He worked for the Department of Defense in Pittsburgh, Honolulu and Orlando for a total of 30 years prior to his retirement.

He spent the past 10 years working as purchasing manager at the University of Central Florida.

Survivors include his sons, Jeffery R. Smith, of Vero Beach and Gregory J. Smith, of Clermont; daughter, Karen A. Snapp, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; sister, Joan Bowery, of Pittsburgh; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lynn Smith, Warren Smith and Raymond Smith; and granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Smith.
