Companies donate time, equipment, compost for gardening project

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A joint project between Sustainable Indian River, Inc. and Pelican Island Audubon Society has secured good quality compost for community gardens in Indian River County. The compost is produced by Waste Management at their Okeechobee Organics Recycling facility where pre-consumer food, flowers and bakery waste is composted with shredded yard waste.

The project would not have been possible without generous donations from several companies. Waste Management donated a portion of the compost, Anytime Waste donated the use of a truck and driver for the delivery and Russell Payne of Mr. Mulch donated his central location with front end loaders to be the distribution site.

PIAS will use the compost in their Square Foot Gardening Project which is being implemented into the local schools.
