George Feagin “Big” Hamner, 88, Vero Beach

George Feagin “Big” Hamner, 88, died Sept. 27, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Seale, Ala., and lived in Vero Beach since 1966, coming from Jacksonville.

He was chairman of Indian River Exchange Packers, president and chairman of the Indian River Citrus League and director of Seald Sweet Growers.

He received the John T. Leslie Award of Excellence and Leadership presented by the Florida Citrus Packers.

He was a decorated World War II Army veteran, serving more than 2½ years in an amphibious assault unit in the Pacific in New Guinea, Netherlands East Indies, Philippines and Japan with the first occupying forces.

He was a director of the Beach Bank of Vero Beach (now Northern Trust), a member and president of the Vero Beach Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow.

He also served as a director of the AIDS Research and Treatment Center, chairman of the board of AlcoHope of the Treasure Coast and chairman and founding member of Hanley Hall Treatment Center.

He was a mechanical engineering graduate of Auburn University and a member of Blue Key Honor Society.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and served on its vestry.

He was a member of Quail Valley River Club, Vero Beach Country Club and the Riomar Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ann Graves Hamner; son, George Hamner Jr., of Vero Beach; daughter, Nancy Hamner Gordon, of Charlottesville, Va.; brother, Nicholas Hamner, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gustavus Orum Hamner.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 at Trinity Episcopal Church with a reception following in the Great Hall.
