VERO BEACH — The Pirates’ victory bell rang loud and clear after the Saint Edwards football team chalked up a 47 – 0 win against Calvary Christian Academy Lions, during a home game at St. Edwards’ stadium.
The Pirates dominated the field offensively, defensively and with special teams.
St. Edwards moved the ball like an unstoppable juggernaut. The Pirates capitalized on Lions’ mistakes without fail throughout the one-sided contest.
The game was not without some challenges and, for one player, a bit of a scare early into the match.
Two minutes into the game, Pirates receiver Anderson Proctor was knocked to the ground with such ferocity he said he was momentarily dazed. Lying on the field with the breath knocked out of him, Proctor knew he didn’t want to feel that kind of hit again anytime soon.
“It was a little bit of a wake-up call,” Proctor said. “It made me slow things down a bit and calmed my nerves.”
Proctor seemed none the worse for the wear when he made an airborne interception five minutes into the third quarter.
The only thing concerning him were the 11 Lions’ player hot on his tail, he said.
“I was just scared those guys were going to run me down in the end,” Proctor said. “It felt great, though.”
The interception set St. Edwards up for an easy touchdown and Proctor would go on to rack up two touchdowns of his own.
Pirates’ running back Brock Miller added 18 points to the scoreboard and Daryl Norwood had an additional two touchdowns.
Calvary Christian head coach William Glenn said his team was simply outgunned.
“They just won it,” Glenn said. “They played sound football and won the game. We didn’t.”
Pirates Head Coach Bill Mota said he was thrilled to watch his players perform so well against Calvary Christian.
“It feels great coming off of an open week and going out there and having this kind of success,” Mota said.
Having faced a similar loss at the hands of Warner Christian Academy only a couple of weeks ago, it felt good to see the Pirates play up to their capabilities, he said.
“There have not been a whole lot of changes,” Mota said. “We’re still doing the same things we have been.”
In the end, it’s always the amount of effort that wins or loses games, he said.
“They work hard,” Mota said. “A game like this is a result of that work.”
Next, the Pirates face South Florida Heat in a home game Oct. 5.
