VERO BEACH — On Saturday Sept. 29 the Indian River Citrus Museum will open its doors free of charge along with over 1,400 other participating venues for the eighth annual Museum Day Live! This immensely successful program encourages learning and the spread of knowledge nationwide.
The Citrus Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on that Saturday. Located at 2140 14th Avenue, the Museum is in the heart of historic downtown Vero Beach.
Inclusive by design, Museum Day Live! fulfills Smithsonian Media’s mission to make heritage and cultural education accessible to everyone. The Indian River Citrus Museum will grant free access to visitors who download a Museum Day Live! ticket at Smithsonian.com. Last year’s event drew over 350,000 museum-goers, and this year’s Museum Day Live! is expected to attract close to 400,000 participants.
“Even though we do not charge admission as it is, we want to be a part of this great museum promotion. An event that encourages people to visit their local museums is a wonderful opportunity for all of us,” said Rebecca Rickey, executive director of the Heritage Center and Indian River Citrus Museum.
The Indian River Citrus Museum is a small exhibit that uses old photos, tools and artifacts to chronicle the history of the citrus industry in Indian River County. The Museum is actually a part of the larger historic building known as the Heritage Center. Built in 1935 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is a vital link to the history and heritage of Vero Beach and Indian River County.
The Museum Day Live! Ticket will be available to download beginning in August at Smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors who present the Museum Day Live! Ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues for one day only. One ticket is permitted per household, per email address.
