Public safety communications take apparent hit from afternoon storm

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Just after 2 p.m., the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office began having major computer problems, apparently related to a storm system pounding the area.

Communications Director Jeff Luther confirmed that calls were being dispatched the old-fashioned way over the radio instead of the new system of sending information on calls for service via the internet to deputies’ on-board notebook computers.

“I know we’re having problems, but I don’t know what’s caused it,” Luther said just before 2:30 p.m.

Luther said he was still checking to see if phone calls were being received and routed despite the technical issues and if the problem was caused by a lightning strike to some equipment.

There is no estimate as to when normal communications will be restored. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office dispatches police, fire and medical calls throughout Indian River County to the appropriate agencies.

The story will be updated as more information becomes available.
