Overview of Organization: Keep Indian River Beautiful, Inc. (KIRB) is a 501 C(3) organization designed to empower individuals to take greater responsibility for community environments by involving volunteers in litter prevention, beautification, recycling, and conservation education.

Overview of Event: KIRB is proud to be a part of the 27th Annual Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, which has become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health.

KIRB brings over 400 volunteers to clean up beaches, waterways, spoil islands, parks, and boat ramps throughout Indian River County. Volunteers young and old pick up cigarette butts, fishing line, bottles, and other leftover debris.

For many volunteers, it is their first glimpse into the deterioration of our oceans and waterways, an experience that spurs a deeper commitment to marine conservation.

They learn how much land-based trash never makes it to landfills, but instead is carried by wind and water, eventually winding up in the ocean.

This event helps change the way people think about a healthy planet. By cleaning up the trash, they do their part to clean the ocean, and a clean ocean is more resilient to the effects of climate change, pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction.

Keep Indian River Beautiful, Inc. (KIRB) gives every volunteer supplies needed for the cleanup such as: a data card to collect what is collected for reporting, sunblock, trash & recycle bag, garbage grabbers, insect repellant, water for drinking, donated by Nestle, and a T-shirt with the sponsor’s name and logo on the back.
