Sebastian City Council honors career Army officer

SEBASTIAN — Among the agenda items before Mayor Jim Hill and the Sebastian City Council Wednesday night was a proclamation honoring Sebastian resident Sergeant First Class Hamilton McWhorter for his decades of service in the United States Army.

Sgt. McWhorter, a third-generation serviceman following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, retired on Aug. 10 after 20 years in the Army. He enlisted in 1992 as a helicopter mechanic, and during his service was deployed to Haiti, Bosnia and then to Iraq for six years.

While assigned to the 101st Airborne Air Assault division in Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was injured and had five spinal operations, resulting in his return to domestic soil. After returning to Florida, Sgt. McWhorter worked at Patrick Air Force Base in Brevard County as an Equal Opportunity Advisor and then as an instructor at the U.S. Department of Defense Equal Opportunity Institute.

He lives with his wife, Melissa, in Sebastian. The couple has six children.
