There are, of course, no one-size-fits-all answers to personal issues, but sometimes we have to drag ourselves outside our comfort zones in order to keep moving forward in the face of challenges, from simple boredom and creeping lethargy to major hits and heartbreaking losses. Frequently we find that reaching out to others goes very far in bouncing us out of our slump. . Our community is richly blessed with possibilities for reaching out, in the form of volunteering, with numerous non-profit organizations doing wonderful things in many different ways.
Especially when we feel we can’t even summon the energy to put our shoes on…that is the very time we need to – “put our shoes on.”
Here at Habitat, we have an amazing treasure of volunteers without whom we could never do what we do, and the same is true for most of the other non-profits. If you’re a volunteer already, you know the truth in the statement that volunteers get back as much as they give.
It you’re dealing with the summertime droops, or more serious issues, give consideration to “putting your shoes on” and joining the Habitat volunteers. There is always something for a volunteer to do. For example – Currently we’re looking for Food Angels, people who prepare and deliver mid-morning snacks to the construction site volunteers.(And when you do this, BOY, are you going to be popular!)
We also need adults to work with the young people in our youth program – principally, The Prep Club, for teenagers. With love and guidance we can do a lot to help these children of our Habitat homeowners discover the opportunities they can have to further their education and improve their lives.
Even if you’re feeling great and everything is okey-dokey, reaching out to people in need is good for the heart – and the soul.
Have a good one.
