Dollar General to open Fellsmere store this fall

FELLSMERE — Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Dollar General expects to have a store open in Fellsmere, now that the Fellsmere City Council has signed off on the company’s site plan. The 9,100-square-foot store will be built on the north side of County Road 512, just east of the Snak Shak.

“They’re excited about being here,” developer Don Wallace said of the Dollar General corporation. “They believe they’ll do well.”

Dollar General considers itself a community general store and tends to locate sites in rural locations.

“That’s their main, core business,” Wallace said.

Wallace told the Fellsmere City Council that they would have already had the store built and open if not for having to go through the site development and permitting process. As it is, he expects construction to start Aug. 1 and plans to be open by the end of October or start of November.

The Fellsmere City Council unanimously approved the proposed site plan for the store with the caveat that city staff review a lighting plan as well as plans for the store’s monument sign.

“I think it looks really good,” Councilwoman Sara Savage said of the architectural renderings for the store.

Dollar General would be one of the first buildings drivers coming into Fellsmere from the east would see.

The building’s front resembles an old-time general store and would have parking on the west side – near the Snak Shak. Deliveries would be made on the east side of the building, visible to drivers coming into town.

After the council meeting, Wallace said Dollar General will need to hire a seasoned manager and about a dozen part- and full-time employees. He said those interested in applying can do so online at www.DollarGeneral.com and click “Careers” under the Search box.

They can also fill out an application at the Sebastian Dollar General, located at 13640 US 1 or call that store to speak to the manager, (772) 589-8501.
