International Assistance Dog Week is August 5-12

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — On July 17, 2012, representatives from Dogs For Life, Inc., a local non-profit organization who trains assistance dogs for hearing and mobility challenged individuals, will be receiving proclamations by the Indian River County Commissioners at 9 a.m., and then by the City Council of Vero Beach at 9:30 a.m., recognizing August 5-12, 2012, as International Assistance Dog Week.

International Assistance Dog Week was created to recognize all the devoted, hardworking assistance dogs helping individuals mitigate their disability-related limitations.

In addition to honoring assistance dogs during their special week, one of the goals is to raise awareness about these very special and highly trained animals.

Additional goals are to recognize and honor the hardworking assistance dogs as well as their owners and trainers while we raise awareness and educate the public about how these specially trained animals are aiding so many people in our community.

Assistance dogs transform the lives of their human partners with debilitating physical and mental disabilities by serving as their companion’s helper, aide, best friend, and close member of their family.

We hope everyone in our area will join us to celebrate the selfless love and devotion these dogs provide by attending the City of Vero Beach Council and Indian River County Commission meetings.
