UPDATE: Cyclist identified in fatal Vero Beach crash

VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach Police Department has identified the bicyclist killed in Wednesday’s crash involving a city recreation employee. The cyclist was 52-year-old Pierre Mendy, who was riding his bike to work when he struck the side of the truck.

The truck driver, identified as Recreation Department employee Robert Greco, immediately called 911 and requested an ambulance for Mendy, the Vero Beach Police Department said.


VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach Police Department is investigating a fatal collision between a city-owned vehicle and a bicyclist at the intersection of 17th Avenue and eastbound State Road 60 that occurred Wednesday at about 6:40 a.m.

Capt. Keith Touchberry, a police spokesman, confirmed that the vehicle involved in the crash was part of the City of Vero Beach Recreation Department.

He said the vehicle, driven by Robert Greco, was on 17th Avenue waiting to turn onto SR 60 when the bicyclist, identified as a 52-year-old male heading west on the sidewalk along SR 60, struck the truck.

He was taken to Indian River Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8 a.m.

His identification is pending notification of next of kin.
