Salvatore Giammanco, 87, Vero Beach

Salvatore Giammanco, 87, died June 22, 2012, at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.

He was born in Paceco, Italy, and lived in Vero Beach for 22 years, coming from Clark, N.J.

He served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

April 1 marked the 67th anniversary of being shot through the chest at the Battle of Okinawa.

He was the first Marine wounded and received the Purple Heart medal.

Before retirement, he was a radio engineer for several radio stations in New York.

He was a HAM radio operator and held numerous FCC licenses.

He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach.

He was a member of DAV, the Marine Corps League of Vero Beach and the Order of the Purple Heart.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Josephine Giammanco, of Vero Beach; daughter, Margaret Keene, of Snohomish, Wash.; son, Michael Giammanco, of Skillman, N.J.; brother, John Giammanco, of Long Island, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. June 30 at Aycock Funeral Home in Fort Pierce, with inurnment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Fort Pierce.
